Gas and steam turbines utilize recycled lubricating oil for seals and bearings within the unit. They are equipped with a self-contained reservoir for the oil return and storage. The return oil has been subjected to various mechanical forces and high temperatures in the seals and bearings, causing an oil mist to be present in the reservoir. As the oil mist containing sub-micron droplets condenses, it creates a visible plume. This plume appears as a “blue smoke” which, if not removed, can accumulate as oil on roofs, buildings, and equipment.
FLEXIFIBER® type BD mist eliminators are used to remove the oil droplets from the vapor. The collected oil is returned to the oil reservoir. This same type of technology can also be applied to reciprocating compressors and venting of crankcases.
