RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT
SEPARATIONS TECHNOLOGY
The future of an organization is its research & development department. At Koch-Glitsch, 90% of our profits are reinvested in our business and research funding is critical to meeting our customer needs. An excellent example of our commitment to research is our recent multi-million dollar investment in our Medford 5 feet diameter demonstration tower.
Facilities
Koch-Glitsch has 9 pilot plant towers (2 hydrocarbon and 7 air-water) ranging from 8” to 8’ in diameter.
We have a fully equipped laboratory with gas chromatography, automatic titrimetry, spectrophotometric analysis, and wet chemical analytical and physical property determinations.
A distributor test facility capable of testing liquid distributors up to 30 feet in diameter.
KMPS pilot plant facility in Houston includes several distillation and extraction pilot test columns, as well as equilibrium data development apparatus. Click

Pilot Plant Testing Services
Koch-Glitsch can provide pilot testing for customers. Typical applications where testing may be appropriate include:
The relative volatility of the components is very small (close to 1.0) and the exact number of transfer units or stages for separation is uncertain (i.e., isomers).
Product specifications are extremely stringent (i.e., part per million level).
There are highly non-ideal properties (i.e., azeotropes, aqueous/organics, etc.).
New processes or unusual component mixtures for which property data is not available for computer process simulation.
Efficiency data is not available for the tower packing being considered for the commercial tower.
Distributor Testing
Poor packed tower operating results can often be traced to unacceptable distributor performance. Depending on the application and tower site, an operating plant can lose hundreds of thousands of dollars every day due entirely to limited capacity and off-spec product caused by distributor-generated maldistribution and flooding. Koch-Glitsch’s distributor testing facility uses automatic data acquisition and computer analysis to rapidly and accurately confirm a distributor’s performance. Customers are welcome to have one or more of their engineers on-site to observe the testing and to discuss results.
Medford Demonstration Tower
Koch-Glitsch has converted a 5-ft diameter depropanizing column at a large natural-gas-liquids plant owned by Koch Hydrocarbon Company in Medford, Oklahoma into a research tower. This column is able to switch back and forth between functioning as a production tower and as a tray and packing research column. In research mode, the setup will permit accurate determination of tray and packing capacity, pressure drop, and especially efficiency in a truly commercial environment. Currently, ULTRA-FRAC
®
trays are being evaluated.
