Koch-Glitsch Equipment
Our conventional tray experience in nylon intermediates is extensive, and our high capacity tray installations continue to grow since their first application in this service in the mid 1990s. Koch-Glitsch structured packing products have been utilized successfully to increase the efficiency and capacity of nylon intermediates columns since the late 1980s. High capacity structured packings are the next step for many fouling-prone columns where augmented capacity or efficiency must be achieved without increasing bottoms temperature and pressure.

Koch-Glitsch’s variety of products, proven design know-how, and wide experience in these applications ensures the right application of technology for your column.

Koch-Glitsch has over two dozen conventional structured packing installations operating in North America alone. FLEXIPAC® HC® high capacity structured packing is our new standard and has been applied with overwhelming success in upgrading the performance of intermediates columns.

Conventional valve or sieve trays are still used for a large number of upstream, more fouling-prone columns within these intermediates units. High capacity fixed valves are an attractive option for revamp of these trayed columns where lower pressure drop is desirable but where structured packing has not been tested.

Koch-Glitsch has know-how in internals designs for the wide range of requirements in intermediates columns. Solids-resistant, low liquid holdup internals designs are available for severe fouling applications. Alternately, ultra-high quality distribution designs are available for large diameter and multiple-bed columns requiring high stage counts.

FAQ

Q: My column has a habit of fouling, primarily in areas close to the feed point. I would like to boost the performance of this column and am interested in the capacity and low pressure drop advantages of structured packing. What do you suggest?
A: There are several possible solutions, depending on the nature, cause, and severity of fouling. If solids are introduced in the feed stream, then an external filter is recommended. Additionally, fouling-resistant trays or packing may be used in the immediate vicinity of the feed, with higher efficiency packing utilized in sections of the column less prone to fouling. For columns with existing conventional trays, the lower pressure drop associated with high capacity fixed valve trays may sufficiently lower the bottoms pressure so that temperature-generated fouling is significantly decreased. In any case, it is important to communicate the exact nature and history of the fouling so that Koch-Glitsch may provide the best solution for your particular situation.
