External parallel filter
recommendations for packed towers
by Pamela Tokerud

Parallel external filters are recommended on all lines entering your packed tower (reflux and feed) to prevent fouling of the distributors and packing, which could result in degradation of your column’s performance. The filter size is more a function of the distributor orifice diameter. It is industry practice to specify the pore size to be approximately one-fourth of the area of the orifice; however, the size should be based on actual operating experience.

Differences between the use of parallel external and internal filters can mean the difference between operating or not. Specifically, parallel external filters can be removed and cleaned without disrupting operation. The use of parallel external filters provides that extra insurance of maintaining cleanliness in the distributor at all times.  Additionally, for critical separations where fouling is of greater concern, it is suggested to utilize filters in series. A staged filter size of
1/3 to 1/1 of the orifice diameter is recommended for the first stage and 1/5 to 1/10 of the orifice diameter is recommended for the second stage to more effectively remove particles without disruption.

After taking these precautions, it is important to confirm that all lines and auxiliary equipment are thoroughly flushed from high to low points before connection to the column. This will avoid introduction of significant quantities of corrosion products, construction debris, dirt and other materials upon start-up.
